Screen Shot 2014-07-10 at 12.54.42 PMThe American Society of Travel Writers has awarded Richard Bangs the highest award given in the 2013 Travel Journalism Competition for the production entitled Richard Bangs’ South America: Quest for Wonder. This is the 29th annual Lowell Thomas contest, overseen by the SATW Foundation and Richard Bangs’ Quests for Wonder TV Special has taken the gold five straight years in a row.

We wish to thank our partners in this production  Orbitz WorldwideLAN Airlines, TravelSmith, American Public Television (APT) and hosting station KQED.

This public TV special attempted to answer a simple question. If Wonder has its roots in childhood, in an uninhibited response to the beauty and mystery of the new, then what happens when we grow up? What stirs us as adults?

Richard answers this question by tracing the contours of wonder on a journey across South America. From the magnificent displays of grand nature; to the riddles that ripple through time; to the mystic power of ancient beauty; to the marvels of diversity at play on a living canvas, the Quest radiates to four of the greatest wonders on the planet, Iguaçu Falls in Brazil and Argentina; Easter Island in Chile; the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru; and the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador.

The SATW Foundation sponsors the annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition. The first contest honored work done in 1984. Today the Foundation awards nearly $20,000 annually in prize money for outstanding print, online and multimedia works and for travel photography and both audio and video broadcast. It is the premier competition in North America in the field of travel journalism. It has gained its stature for several reasons, most notably: it does not promote any particular destination or travel product; it is open to all North American journalists, not just SATW members; and, it is judged independently by the faculty at top U.S. schools of journalism.
